Black History Month: 5 Sustainable Fashion Brands to Check out.

"When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace." ~ Jimi Hendrix

2020 called us all to the attention of the injustice that the BIPOC community has faced for years. So much has been done since; but we believe that there is still more good that can be done.

For the next 2 weeks, in honor of Black History Month, glorka.com will be sharing our list of bipoc owned fashion brands that have inspired us and continue to do so.

Here are our brand picks for sustainable black-owned fashion brands  living out bold, stylish and unique!

1.Proclaim

Proclaim is an inclusive lingerie line, expanding the definition of “nude,” one ethically-made bra at a time. The founder, Shobha Philips, started Proclaim because she was incredibly tired of never being able to find a “nude” that matched her brown skin tone.

Perhaps more incredible than Proclaims unique, cut-out bra designs is the super soft fabric, which is made from 100% post-consumer plastic water bottles. You’ll definitely want to keep Proclaim on your radar for more inclusive design releases in the future.

2.Wasi Clothing

Wasi Clothing is a brown owned Bolivian-American business based in sunny Los Angeles, California. It is a one woman business run by Vanessa Acosta. Wasi Clothing's mission is to put Bolivian culture on the map as well as elevating and creating a safe home for people of color and allies to shop.

Select textiles are personally sourced from South America and handmade from scratch in Los Angeles by Vanessa herself. WASI is a Quechuan word that means "Home", it is one of the last words her late grandfather translated for her while she visited him in Bolivia and has truly worked to build a business that creates the home-y environment for so many.

3.Hope for Flowers

Hope For Flowers is designed for women who are inspired by beauty and also desire to use their power as consumers to be agents for positive change in the world.

They believe that by incorporating positive, social and ecological practices into our sourcing and operating structures, they can imbue their products with greater substance and offer our customers an opportunity to be a part of doing good while looking good.

4.Valerie Madison

Valerie Madison founded her namesake fine jewelry brand in 2014. The Seattle-based designer creates timeless, elegant styles honoring her Environmental Science degree by responsibly sourcing her materials.

Her collections are made with recycled gold, diamond alternatives like Moissanite and when possible Canadian-mined or recycled diamonds.

5.beRESONANT

beRESONANT features brands that create inclusive, vibrant, and sustainable clothes. It doesn’t hold any inventory; rather, every item is made only after purchase, so nothing ends up in landfill or incinerated.

Its manufacturing facilities use less dye, water, and raw material than traditional processes, meaning their products have a smaller carbon footprint. In addition to this, the team runs the beRESONANT Accelerator, helping talented, under-represented creators build viable fashion businesses.

We are proud to share this list of amazing creators focused on sustainable, eco-friendly green fashion!
